Two seemingly separate narratives become more obviously interwoven as the stories unfold. There is drama and humor in this southern tale - a heartfelt look at human frailities, and the importance of forgiveness and spiritual renewal. Very well written with real southern characters, culture and local color. Only one gaff, Maxine lived near USC's Williams-Brice Stadium not the Carolina Coliseum. Also, a compliment was given not a complement. Maxine is an excellent example of a generation of blacks grounded in faith and hard work; not Uncle Toms but people of dignity and strength working like MLK toward a reconciliation of races. Miss White castle is an example that change and grace can occur at any point in life accepting Christ's mercy.Product details

Broken Shells Deena Bouknight 9781491065709 Books Reviews
I couldn't put this book down. I ended up staying up until the wee hours of the morning because I couldn't wait to see how the two sets of characters finally connected. Refreshing book about life and death-all written in the beautiful backdrop of the Carolinas. Must read!

I found this to be a sweet, somewhat predictable story about an inter-racial friendship.
I enjoyed the author's descriptions if the rivers, beaches and lowlands of South Carolina.
Book was recommended by one of the Coastal magazines I often read.
I like the two different stories and when they started to meld together and become one story. I didn’t want to put it down until I was finished. Hope she writes many more.
Deena Bouknight's debut novel provides a realistic window into the world of Southern charm, societal expectations, and life-changing events. She expertly narrates two seemingly disparate tales, leaving the reader guessing until nearly the end of the book how they are inextricably woven together. Life, death, hurt, redemption, faith, reconciliation...Booknight deals with these complexities of life in gentle but insistent style. A beautiful read that leaves you wanting more.
From the time I received my copy of this novel, I could not put it down. Like a swift moving mountain current, the two seemingly simultaneous yet seperate stories skillfully revealed on alternate chapters, propel the reader. Deena Bouknight has crafted a novel that is excitingly non-predictable yet highly believable. I agree with her character, Maxine, there is beautifulness in 'broken shells'.
The first read through was swift, as I had to know . . . had to find out. . . how these seemingly seperate stories come together and end.
The second read was to savor and ponder the story, its nuances, and to challenge myself to recognize the many literary elements a gifted writer uses and incorporates.
After reading Broken Shells, my next thought was . . . I hope Deena Bouknight is writing another book!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. Loved the characters and content. I could easily visualize
the events in the story and the southern setting. I found myself not wanting to put it down once I started reading.
Will definitely be following this author and purchasing more of her novels. .
I loved this book of a strong spirited, elderly proper southern lady who discovers that her “servant” was much more than that.. as she seeks medical help and diagnosis and goes on to provide a beautiful place where her friend (servant) can die a dignified and peaceful death. As she discovers her own strength and character, she lets go of her own pain in her past and as she works through this, and confides in her friend, she frees herself and another.
Well written book. I didn’t want it to end! This especially appeals to me because I am a hospice nurse. I wish every one could die this way... and I wish more people could find that peace of forgiveness.
